It's All Good

Sunday, June 14: Romans 8:18-39
“We know that all things
work together for good
for those who love God,
who are called
according to his purpose.”
– Romans 8:28

  1. What a difference a preposition makes! The older (RSV) translation says "We know that in everything God works for good *with* those who love him, who are called according to his purpose." This puts us in partnership with God's work - an interpretation which I personally much prefer, and which seems in fact to be more consonant with the preceding verses: "...the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God... because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God.... Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought...."
